[46] year 667/1258–59

In the year 667, the senior wife of Hülegü, Qutui Khatun, because of the disorder in that province, arrived from Turkestan. Her two elder sons, Takeshī[n] 17 and Tekūdār (later Sultan Ahmad), who had wives and children, accompanied her.

Abaqa had great respect for them and gave them a great many possessions and land. His own concubine named Ārqān was from the house of Qutui Khatun. She had come with Hülegü from that place, from Qutui’s ordu, and whatever was Qutui Khatun’s share, this Ārqān used to appropriate it. At the time of the death of Hülegü, she struck herself with a knife and killed herself. When Qūtī Khatun came to her home, it so happened that her house was richly decorated with a variety of items.

Abaqa arrived from the province of Diyarbakr and Miyāfārqīn and he awarded Qutui Khatun a few provinces, from which each year she accrued about 100,000 Khalīftī dinar, and that income was squandered foolishly.

Even though Abaqa would continually lavish them with gifts, attention, provisions, flocks, and herds, they [Qutui’s party] resented his position as sovereign.
